Barr deal seen as a boon for Teva

In April, two top executives from Teva Pharmaceutical broached the subject of an acquisition -- again -- with Bruce Downey, chief executive of Barr Pharmaceuticals, as they waited for a table at the Hamburger Hamlet in Palm Beach, Fla.

Downey and the Teva executives, Shlomo Yanai and William Marth, had slipped away from a trade meeting for lunch. Deciding the restaurant foyer was too crowded, they went outside to wait, taking a seat on a bench where they talked about the possibility of Teva, an Israeli company, acquiring Barr, a generic drugmaker based in New Jersey.
